Revista științifică Apulum. Acta Mvsei Apvlensis apare începând cu anul 1942. Fondatorul ei este Ion Berciu.

Revista reprezintă oglinda științifică a activității specialiștilor Muzeului Național al Unirii Alba Iulia și colaboratorilor lor. Treptat, numărul autorilor externi instituției a crescut, revista adresându-li-se cu predilecție. Revista este open access începând cu numărul 37/2000.

De fapt, un prim anuar ştiinţific al muzeului albaiulian a fost publicat în perioada 1888-1917, cu titlul Az Alsófehérmegyei történelmi, régészeti és természettudományi egylet. Cele 18 volume apărute în intervalul amintit conţineau studii de arheologie, istorie şi ştiinţe naturale, cu referire în cea mai mare parte la meleagurile Albei. Publicarea unei reviste ştiinţifice a muzeului a fost reluată în anul 1942, de această dată sub titlul „Apulum. Acta Mvsei Apvlensis”, la sugestia profesorului Mihail Macrea. Primele numere au apărut la intervale mai mari de timp unul faţă de celălalt, pregătirea lor necesitând timp şi lovindu-se de diferite blocaje financiare sau ideologice (vol. II – 1946; vol. III – 1949; vol. IV – 1961; vol. V – 1965). Din 1967, însă, cu mici excepţii, revista apare regulat.

Din anul 2011, anuarul este împărțit în două volume: Series Archaeologica et Anthropologica (ISSN – 2247-8701), respectiv Series Historia & Patrimonium (ISSN – 2247-871X). Pentru series Historia & Patrimonium există și un supliment tematic, în care sunt publicate lucrările Conferinței naționale „Bibliologie și Patrimoniu Cultural Național”.

În anul 2025, anuarul Apulum a ajuns la tomul LXII.   

Aria tematică este una extinsă: sunt publicate studii în domeniul arheologiei, numismaticii, istoriei, istoriei culturii, antropologiei istorice, etnografiei, muzeologiei și conservării-restaurării patrimoniului cultural; recenzii și note de lectură în domeniile enumerate. Subiecte frecvente în paginile revistei au fost următoarele: cercetările din siturile de la Tărtăria – Gura Luncii și Teleac, castrul legiunii a XIII-a Gemina, centrul urban Apulum, restaurarea patrimoniului cultural național, istoria cărții și Unirea Transilvaniei cu România.

  • Aims & Scope: a statement defining the editorial focus of the journal (archaeology, anthropology, and related disciplines, with a particular focus on Transylvania, the Roman provinces of Dacia, and Central-Southeastern European archaeology) and its intended readership (researchers, academics, museum specialists, students, and professionals in the field of archaeology and anthropology).
  • Submission criteria: the types of contributions accepted (original research articles, studies, reviews, archaeological reports), authorship criteria, and explicit policies prohibiting multiple submissions and redundant publications.
  • ISSN: the print ISSN is clearly displayed on the journal’s website and on every published article.
    Peer Review Process

    All scholarly content published in Apulum. Series Archaeologica et Anthropologica and Series Historia & Patrimonium is subject to a rigorous double-blind peer review process. Both the identity of the authors and that of the reviewers are kept confidential throughout the entire evaluation procedure.

    The peer review process is carried out as follows:

    • Submitted manuscripts are first assessed by the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial team for compliance with the journal’s scope, scholarly quality, and formal requirements.
    • Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial assessment are sent to at least two independent external reviewers who are recognised experts in the relevant subject area and who are not members of the journal’s editorial staff.
    • Reviewers evaluate manuscripts based on originality, methodology, scholarly contribution, clarity, and adherence to academic standards.
    • Based on the reviewers’ recommendations (accept, accept with minor revisions, accept with major revisions, or reject), the Editor-in-Chief takes the final decision regarding publication.
    • The average duration of the peer review process is between two and four months, depending on the complexity of the manuscript and the availability of reviewers.

    The journal does not guarantee manuscript acceptance and does not advertise unrealistically short peer review times. All articles published in the journal are clearly marked as peer-reviewed.

    Ownership and Management

    The journal Apulum. Series Archaeologica et Anthropologica and Series Historia & Patrimonium is owned, published, and managed by the National Museum of the Union (Muzeul Național al Unirii), Alba Iulia, Romania, a public cultural institution under the authority of the Alba County Council. The full ownership and management information is clearly indicated on the journal’s website. No misleading organisational or journal names are used.

    Governing Body / Editorial Board

    The journal is governed by an Editorial Board composed of recognised experts in archaeology, anthropology, classical studies, and related disciplines, drawn from prestigious academic and research institutions in Romania and abroad.

    The full names, academic titles, institutional affiliations, and countries of all members of the Editorial Board and of the Scientific Advisory Board are publicly available on the journal’s website. Members of the Editorial Board contribute to defining the editorial policy, ensuring scholarly quality, and overseeing the peer review process.

    Access

    The journal Apulum. Series Archaeologica et Anthropologica and Series Historia & Patrimonium is a fully open access publication. All articles are freely available to readers worldwide, immediately upon publication, without subscription, registration, or pay-per-view charges. The full text of each article can be downloaded directly from the journal’s website in PDF and/or HTML format.

    Archiving

    The journal ensures the long-term preservation of and continued access to its content through the following measures:

    • Permanent digital archiving of all published volumes on the official website of the National Museum of the Union, Alba Iulia.
    • Deposit of the journal’s content in institutional and national digital repositories, including the Romanian National Library deposit system.
    • Indexing and archiving in international scholarly databases and digital libraries (such as CEEOL — Central and Eastern European Online Library).
    • In the event that the journal is no longer published, all previously published content will remain freely accessible through the institutional digital archive of the National Museum of the Union and through the partner repositories listed above.
    Revenue Sources

    The journal Apulum. Series Archaeologica et Anthropologica and Series Historia & Patrimonium is fully funded through institutional support provided by the National Museum of the Union, Alba Iulia, with budgetary allocations from the Alba County Council. The journal does not generate revenue from author fees, subscriptions, advertising, or reprints.

    Editorial decisions are taken solely on the basis of scholarly merit and are in no way influenced by funding sources, institutional considerations, or any other commercial or financial factors.
